African Witchdoctor

African Witchdoctor

A witch doctor often refers to healers in some third world regions, who use traditional healing rather than contemporary medicine. The witch doctors in Africa are known as Sangomas in southern Africa. The term "Witch Doctor" is considered by some to be a  derogatory term used by early colonialists to undermine African culture; however, here it is used in honor of the indigenous healers in Africa. The correct English term for Sangomas is Traditional Healer. The Oxford English Dictionary states that the first use of the term "witch doctor" to refer to African shamans (i.e. medicine men) was in 1836 in a book by Robert Montgomery Martin (1803?-1868).

A Sangoma is essentially an African Shaman who is a practitioner of herbal medicine, divination, and counseling in traditional Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele and Swazi) societies of Southern Africa. The healing philosophy is based on a belief in ancestral spirits. Both men and women can be called by the ancestors, though there are more female sangomas than males. If one refuses to answer the ancestral calling, i.e. refuses to become a traditional healer, they are said to suffer ongoing physical and mental illness.  A trainee sangoma (or twaza) trains under another sangoma, usually for a period of years, usually performing humbling service in the community.

At times in the training, and for the graduation, a ritual sacrifice of an animal is performed (usually a chicken, a goat or a cow). The spilling of this blood is meant to seal the bond between the ancestors and the sangoma.

This African witchdoctor doll was inspired by and created for the great African traditional healers.

These Witchdoctor dolls measure approximately 12 inches. They have a full feather head dress and wear a witchdoctor's mask and a hand beaded peyote stitch collar necklace modeled after an authentic traditional African healer

Mini Zulu Doll

Zulu is New Orleans' first and best-known African-American Carnival organization, formally known as the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club. The club was founded in 1909 by African-Americans excluded from the city's mainline Carnival krewes, which were often lampooned in Zulu's satirical antics. Zulu began to parade in 1916, featuring characters such as King Zulu, Big Shot and the Witch Doctor who are city favorites to this day. While Rex rules Carnival with a golden scepter and jeweled crown, King Zulu carries a banana stalk and wears a lard can on his head. And all of the krewe's maskers - now including men and women of all races - wear black face and Afro wigs to turn the tables on racial stereotypes! The prize of the Zulu parade is a painted coconut; they used to be thrown from the floats but are now handed out because of high liability insurance costs due to the risk of injury to spectators.

Measures approximately 5 inches tall.

The Voodoo Hoodoo SpellbookWhat is New Orleans Voodoo Hoodoo?

The term voodoo hoodoo is commonly used by Louisiana locals to describe our unique brand of New Orleans Creole Voodoo. It refers to a blending of religious and magickal elements. There is the tendency for many people to separate Voodoo the religion from hoodoo the magick. However, this separation did not occur in New Orleans as it did in other areas of the country. The so-called magick is part of the religion; the charms are medicine and spiritual tools that hold the inherent healing mechanisms of the traditional religion and culture. Voodoo in New Orleans is a way of life for those who believe. A fellow New Orleans native and contemporary gris gris man Dr. John explains it this way:

In New Orleans, in religion, as in food or race or music, you can’t separate nothing from nothing. Everything mingles each into the other – Catholic saint worship with gris gris spirits, evangelical tent meetings with spiritual church ceremonies – until nothing is purely itself but becomes part of one fonky gumbo. That is why it is important to understand that in New Orleans the idea of voodoo – or as we call it gris gris – is less a distinct religion than a way of life. (Rebennack & Rummel, 1994, p. 159).
