Read all about Li Grande Zombi
at the
New Orleans Voodoo Examiner. |
Li Grand Zombi,
Serpent Deity of
New Orleans
Li Grande Zombi (also called Damballah Wedo) is
the major serpent spirit of worship among New Orleans Voodooists. Damballah Wedo is one of the most revered of the African
gods, the loa of peace and purity, of platinum and silver,
and the one who grants riches and sustains the world.
Optimism emanates from his presence and it is he who is the
original servant to the Creator.
According to one legend, Long ago, the
serpent spirit Damballah created the world. He used his 7,000 coils to form the
stars and the planets in the heavens and to shape the hills and valleys on
earth. He used lightning bolts to forge metals and make the sacred rocks and
stones. When he shed his skin he created all the waters on the earth. And when
the sun showed through mist settling on the plants and trees a rainbow was born.
Her name was Ayeda Wedo. Damballah loved her and made her his wife. They are
still together today, the serpent and the rainbow. Damballah and Ayeda Wedo.
The name of this loa, Li Grande Zombi, is most
commonly linked to the name of Marie Laveau's pet snake, a huge boa constrictor
or royal python (Ball python) who was worshipped at her New Orleans Voodoo
rituals on Bayou St. John. St. John's Eve, June 23. St John’s Eve is the day
when the biggest Voodoo gatherings were held where even members of "polite
society" were invited - including reporters, prominent citizens, and the police.
It is also the day that some believers claim the ghost of Marie Laveau rises
from the dead. To this day, it is still the most important Voodoo holiday in New
Orleans.
In New Orleans Voodoo, snakes
are not seen as symbols of evil as in the story of Adam and
Eve. Snakes are considered to be the holders of intuitive
knowledge – knowing that which cannot be spoken. Women often
dance with serpents to represent the spiritual balance
between the genders. Voodoo rituals in New Orleans almost
always include a snake dance to celebrate the link to the
ancient knowledge.
Some of the
chief attributes of Li Grand Zombi/Damballah Wedo is his lack of human speech and an affinity
for water. He has many aspects, one of which Damballah la Flambeau, where he
appears in fire form and pure active energy. In this form he melds with the
attributes of the Dragon, and represents the outward manifestation of Kundalini
of the East rising.
Purchase
Li Grand Zombi to bring wealth, happiness, optimism, and purity of thought into
your life. To use this Voodoo Doll, light a white candle and tell Damballah Wedo
your wishes in a sacred place. Appropriate offerings for Damballah Wedo include
white eggs, white wine, cabbage, and white flowers. His color is white and his
day is Sunday.

Marie Laveaux, Voodoo Queen of
New Orleans
The Voodoo
Queen of New Orleans. More than anyone else, Marie Laveaux put New Orleans
Voodoo on the map with her powerful magic and infamous ceremonies held in what
are now Congo Square, Bayou St. John, and Lake Ponchartrain. Oral traditions
suggest that the occult part of her magic mixed Roman Catholic beliefs and
saints with African spirits and religious concepts. She is believed to be born
in 1794 in a French and Spanish City, where the Catholic Church dominated the
lives of its citizens. She is celebrated every year on St. John’s Eve, the
foremost Voodoo holiday in New Orleans. St. John’s day corresponds with the
summer solstice. This same celebration has taken place for almost 300 years;
many of those years in Congo Square, though today the celebrations are much more
discreet.

Manman Brigit, Vodou Loa of the Cemeteries,
Money & Justice
In Vodou, Ma'man Brigit (Grann Brigitte, Manman, Manman Brigit, Manman Brijit) is
the mother of cemeteries, the loa of money and death, and the wife of Baron
Samedi. She may be related
to the "triple" Celtic goddess of poetry, smith craft, and healing, Brigid/St.
Brigit, as her name is Irish in origin. She is usually depicted as a white
woman. The first woman's grave in a cemetery in Haiti is dedicated to her. Her
colors are black,
purple and white, her number is nine, and her particular days of service include
Monday and Saturday.
Her sacrificial animal is a black chicken. She drinks rum laced with hot peppers
- "gaz lakrimojen
Ayisyen" (Haitian tear gas),
and like her husband and the rest of the Guede Spirits, she is a "potty mouth"
and uses profanity. Ma'man Brigit will protect gravestones if they are marked
properly with a cross. Ma'man Brigit is known to rub her private parts with hot
peppers, and those who appear to be faking possession by her in a Vodou ceremony
may be subjected to this test, which they obviously would not pass if their
possession is not genuine.
A very powerful Lwa, Manman Brigit rules the
Ghede and transitions of life and death, major life changes,
cemeteries, money and children. Ma'man Brigit is invoked to
cure those who are near death as a result of magick.
She is known to be very wise, and swift to respond to
petitions for help!

Chango, Orisha of Fire, Thunder, Power, &
Sensuality
Chango
is the god of fire, thunder, power, and sensuality. He has the power to help you
win wars, defeat your enemies, and can help you gain power over others. He will
ensure you are victorious over all of your difficulties. Chango is believed to
have once been a Yoruban king; thus, he must be treated as such.
Santa Barbara Bendita is the Catholic
Saint used to represent Chango. The reason this
Saint represents Chango is because of the use of the color red and the sword.
Also, in many depictions of this Saint, there is castle in
the picture, and since Chango was a King, the castle was a
fitting correspondence.
Chango is a very righteous Orisha and
loves to do his part in righting wrongs. He is there to see
that "what goes around comes around". Chango was literally a
king in Africa, whose spirit after death was elevated to the
level of an Orisha.
While alive on earth, he showed no mercy to his
enemies and his fame spread all over much of Africa,
where even the Bantus of the Congo area came to
honor him. There he was called Nsasi. The Araras of
neighboring Dahomey called him Jevioso and Jakuta,
which means the Thrower of the Thunderstones.
Many of the stories about Chango have to
do with his relations with women. Yemaya was his mother. He
had relationships with Ochun, Oya, and Obba. Obba was his
legitimate wife, but he spent more time with Ochun and Oya.
He was a true womanizer and women loved him. After he
exchanged his divination tools with Orunla in exchange for
Orunla's ability to dance, there was no stopping him. Of
course all of this caused problems and Chango often had to
spend much time at war. Chango was a keen diviner and used
his "ache" to come out victorious on many occasions. The
children of Chango usually are born with good psychic
abilities, also. So, if Chango is your father, try to
develop your spirituality to the utmost.
