Conjure,
Spiritual, and Anointing Oils
New Orleans Voodoo hoodoo not
only utilizes roots, herbs and candles its spells; it also
uses conjure oils, spiritual oils, anointing oils, incenses,
floor washes, sprays, waters, and powders. Many spells are
candle-oriented for added power. The color of the candle is
always in sync with the nature of the spell. By dressing the
candles with oils and rolling them in powdered herbs, you
are amplifying the power of your candle, making it that much
more effective in your work.
This chapter reveals an
extensive selection of conjure, spiritual, and anointing
oils used in New Orleans Voodoo and hoodoo. You will need to
know how to make some of them, or you can buy many of them.
Most traditional rootworkers make their own, although
modernization of the practice and the Internet has made it
easier for folks to purchase what they need. Do whatever you
want; there is no law that says you have to make your own
oils. The advantage of making your own, however, is that you
know exactly what is in it and you can charge it with the
desired intent yourself. I carry all of the oils in my own
botanica, and you can refer to the list of suppliers in the
back of the book for more resources.
In addition to the obvious
African and Indian influences on New Orleans formulary, many
of the recipes commonly found in hoodoo today actually
derive from the French perfumers. The first full-time
parfumeur in New Orleans was August Doussan. Doussan
came from France to New Orleans 1843, when he established
the Doussan French Perfumery in the Vieux Carré. Doussan
catered to Creole high society with his exotic perfumes. He
went into business with a young chemist named J.H. Tindel,
who had learned perfumery in Europe. Together, they
successfully marketed their secret formula Eau de Cologne
and a variety of other scents—traditional ones brought from
Europe and the Orient, and many new fragrances developed
from local ingredients. When Doussan retired, the perfume
shop passed to Tindel's care. Eventually, he changed the
store's name to the Bourbon French Perfume Company.[1]
Some of the popular formulas developed in New Orleans by
this line of French perfumers include Voodoo Love,
Kus Kus and Eau de Cologne. At the time of this
writing, the Bourbon French Perfume Company is a
164-year-old thriving business in the heart of New Orleans.
Perfumed oils made their way
into New Orleans formulary with the commoditization of
hoodoo that occurred in the 1930s. There is a subtext to
this influence that has implications of race, class, age,
gender, and sexuality that is typically overlooked but
deserves exposure. But hey, that’s another book . . .
Many traditions of magic work
with plant materials, and most assign some symbolic meanings
or ascriptions to these ingredients. Many hoodoo and Voodoo
spells require certain blends of oils and powders to
accomplish a particular work or to enhance a spell. Always
use a natural carrier oil to blend your magickal oils, as
unblended oils can burn the skin. You should only use a drop
or two at a time on the skin. I use grape seed oil and
almond oil for blending magickal oils, and olive oil for
blending holy oils. Jojoba oil is a good alternative because
it won’t go rancid, although it is more expensive than the
others. Mineral oil is good for negative works and oils
using magnets, minerals, and lodestones as ingredients. You
should always add tincture or liquid resin of benzoin or
vitamin E oil to prevent the oils you create from going
rancid. This additional ingredient is not needed if you are
using mineral oil or jojoba as the carrier.
