Instructions

This tutorial assumes you know how to sew a basic stitch. I like to use blanket stitch when sewing felt, but this is just a personal preference.

Use the following color guidelines when choosing the color fabric to use for making your doll baby.

Yellow –success, understanding, persuasion, attraction, confidence, charm

White – peace, purity, protection, positivity, healing, health, stop gossip, uncrossing, truth, sincerity

Red – power, domination, passion, love, good health, strength, vigor

Purple – spirituality, spiritual healing, psychic ability and manifestation, psychic healing, power, wisdom, Spirit contact, effective against black magic, demonic possession, can be used to throw up a cloak of Spiritual protection, ambition, business progress

Green – money, wealth, prosperity, nature, material gain, fertility, abundance, good fortune, cooperation, generosity, good health, renewal

Blue – love, commanding, color to honor Marie Laveau

Indigo – sacred color, protection against evil

Pink - affection, generosity, selflessness, domestic love, togetherness, gentleness, good luck, spiritual fulfillment, happiness, friendship, morality

Black – hexing, reversing, transformation, getting rid of bad habits, sadness, evil, discord, loss, confusion

Brown – confusing an enemy, hesitation, uncertainty, doubt

Grey - neutrality, stalemate, cancellation

Orange – success, fortunate dreams, encouragement, adaptation, concentration

Step One

Pick out a pattern and cut it out on card stock.

Step Two

Place your pattern on your piece of leather.

Step Three

Pin the pattern to the leather with your straight pins.

Step Four

Cut out the pattern, leaving about 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Step Five

Repeat step four, so you have two sides.

Step Six

Unpin the paper patterns.

Cut the leather down the middle of each side (optional).

Artist hint: Leather tends to have two different looks. One side is smooth and the other side is rough. Also, one side is typically lighter than the other.  I decided to make one half dark and the other half light. This is purely aesthetic and not necessary, but I think it makes him look cool. It is also a sort of take on the traditional New Orleans harlequin dolls that are made using half black and half white material (but that's another tutorial).

Step Seven

Place the patterns together and sew around the entire edge of the voodoo doll. On one side of the doll sew all the way up the middle.

Step Eight

On the other side, starting from the head, sew halfway down. from the bottom, sew halfway up. You should have an opening on one side of the doll where you will put the stuffing. you can leave the feet and arms open if you want. I sewed the hands on mine, and left the feet open.

Step Nine

Take the Spanish moss and stuff your poppet with it.  If you want, you can turn the pattern inside out first. This is entirely optional and depends on how you want him to look.

I turned mine inside out. When you are done stuffing, it should look something like this:

Mojo magick hint: If you intend to use this voodoo poppet in ritual, now is the time to place herbs and other items inside to make him magickal and powerful. Because I want mine to bring business success to his ultimate possessor, I placed some sage inside and infused it with sage essential oil, about 15 drops. You could also place a piece of fool's gold or a coin inside him. He smells awesome!

Step Ten

Sew the opening closed. Tie the feet closed with the hemp cord. If you left the hands open, now is the time to tie them closed also.  Artist hint: It looks cool to leave a little Spanish moss coming out of the feet and hands.

Here's the other side.

Step Eleven

Decide which side you want to use as the front and sew the two buttons on for eyes.

Now you have your basic hoodoo doll baby!

The Voodoo Doll Spellbook: A Compendium of Ancient and Contemporary Spells & Rituals

by Denise Alvarado

There are few complete sources for the history and use of the magickal poppet, or in the Hoodoo and Voodoo traditions - the Voodoo doll. The book provides the reader with a straight-forward historical backdrop to doll use in magick. There are black-and-white photographs of dolls from the African Diaspora, including some interesting ones from the author's private collection, which should inspire the reader. The latter half of the book focuses on how to make dolls, use them in ritual (including some common Hoodoo spells and hexes), common divinities associated with doll use and some oil recipes. I also like that there is a bibliography for additional references and a source page for supplies. This book is a worthy addition to any witch's or practitioner's library.

How would you like to open Marie Laveau's trick bag of Voodoo Doll spells? The Great and Powerful Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, Marie Laveau, was known to create little dolls and place them on the doorsteps of enemies, or use them to win court cases, or to unite lovers. She had a veritable goldmine of brilliant methods for gaining the knowledge she needed for her spells to be effective. One ploy was to surreptitiously place a Voodoo doll near the front door of her victims, more often than not the house-servants of well-known New Orleans families. When the Voodoo doll was discovered, the victim was convinced they had been hexed by someone other than Marie, and would run to Mam'zelle for help. Marie would render the doll harmless if the victim agreed to act as her spy and provide her with information about the affairs of the prominent family where the victim worked. Now that is one hell of a magickal manipulation!

Doktor Snake, author of the cult classic the Voodoo Spellbook, tells how to make money with a Voodoo doll and how to protect yourself with a Voodoo doll. Sharon Marino, the Voodoo Domme of hoodoo, tell how to make a fith fath for domination and binding and how to make a couple of mud dollies inspired by Native American traditions. Finally, pagan author Carolina Dean provides a nifty spell for tripping up a thief.

Inside this book you will find countless secret spells that help you to bind your enemies, banish naysayers, bend people to do your will, and win court cases. For the first time anywhere, you will learn the secret for how to make a Get Even Gris Gris Doll to even the score. Learn how to break up a couple, destroy all of your problems, get a job, cure sickness, call forth spirits, win in games of chance and attain success. Inside, you will find spells to make yourself irresistible, find a lover, make your lover faithful, and spice up your sex life. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

How would you like to know how to make your wishes come true? Or find true love? Catch a thief? Keep your dog or cat from wandering off? Break a curse? Or drive someone crazy?

Many of the spells in this book are based on ancient recipes and rituals that are found in the anthropological literature and archeological records, such as spells from ancient Egypt, Chaldea, Greece, Africa, and Europe. Other spells are based on spells found in ancient sacred texts, and many are from the grimoires of the author herself, shared for the first time in the Voodoo Doll Spellbook. A logical follow up to the author’s previous work, Voodoo Dolls in Magick and Ritual, the Voodoo Doll Spellbook picks up where the former leaves off, providing you with information never before revealed for improving any area of your life using one of the oldest tools of humankind - the Voodoo doll.
