Hoodoo & Conjure Quarterly

A Journal on Southern Folk Magick and Folklore, with a Special Focus on New Orleans Voodoo and Hoodoo

Submission Guidelines

Hoodoo & Conjure Quarterly™ is a quarterly journal on the magickal arts with a special emphasis on New Orleans Voodoo, hoodoo, folk magic and folklore. We are looking for articles outlining various aspects of Southern style hoodoo, conjure and rootwork, candle magic techniques, divination, magickal formularies, working with the saints and psalms, doll magick, and tutorials. We are also interested in related African Traditional Religions and topics. In addition, we are seeking artwork and photography related to these topics.

We seek to have a balance between academic-oriented, informational articles and layperson articles. Our informational articles are geared towards factual information and must be backed up with references and citations. We also encourage practitioners to submit articles and tutorials, artists and photographers to submit artwork and photographs, as well as professional authors and writers to submit manuscripts.

All articles must meet the submission guidelines identified below. For more information about the journal, please visit our website: www.hoodooandconjurequarterly.com.

· Manuscripts should be 500 to 1200 words in length.

· All pages should be single spaced.

· Manuscripts should be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word format via email attachment to hcq@planetvoodoo.com. In the subject line, please put HCQ Journal Submission.

· All tables, figures and other graphics should be at the end of the article, appropriately  labeled,  and camera ready, with reference to each in the content body (i.e. see figure 1).

· References should be provided at the end of the manuscript.

References should be provided at the end of the manuscript.

· A cover page should be included with the manuscript. The cover page should include the title of the article, the date of submission, and the following information for all authors: name, official title and affiliation, office and/or home contact information (address, phone and fax numbers, email    addresses). The manuscript should have the title of the article and the date of submission on the top of the first page of the manuscript. Please include a page containing a short 1 paragraph biography for each author and attach it to the original.

· Manuscripts submitted to the Journal must be original and unpublished work of the  author(s) and must not be under consideration by other publications. Exceptions to this policy must be discussed with the Editor in Chief.

· It is the author’s responsibility to obtain any necessary written permission for use of copyrighted material contained within the article.

· HCQ style is  based on APA  style as outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. This determines such elements as capitalization, hyphenation, use of numerals or spelled-out numbers, and form of parenthetical references. All submissions are edited and proofed according to these guidelines. Layperson articles are not held to as        stringent standards. For more information, please visit: http://www.apastyle.org/learn/faqs/index.aspx

In addition to manual editing and proofing by the editors, all articles are submitted to a  plagiarism detection service. Do not submit any content that is not original because you will be found out and rejected.

Submission to HCQ does not mean your manuscript or article will be accepted for publication. If you are serious about being published, you must follow the submission guidelines or your submission will be rejected.

Historically inaccurate information will be rejected, so check your facts. Opinions should be stated as such; facts need to be backed up by references to legitimate sources (not Wikipedia).

If the editors are interested, they will contact you. You retain all rights to your work. Submitting an article, manuscript, artwork, or photograph indicates your permission to publish the piece in HCQ.

Please note: If the technique you wish to share with our readers was learned in a class, a workshop, or from an art or craft book, Hoodoo & Conjure Quarterly™ requires that you give credit to the author or teacher who instructed you.

All samples, queries, and correspondences should be forwarded to Denise Alvarado, Editor in Chief, Hoodoo & Conjure Quarterly, 5700 E. Market St. #2016, Prescott Valley, AZ. 86314, USA. The editor welcomes brief e-mail queries: denisealvarado@planetvoodoo.com.

Please pay attention to the format of your email. If you send an email with ridiculously informal punctuation, typos, and incorrect grammar, you will not receive a response. We are interested in serious inquiries only.
