About Curses, Hexes, Jinxes, Crossings, and Downright Bad Mojo

The act of cursing an enemy goes as far back as well...the beginning of time!

A curse is any expressed wish that some form of adversity or unhappiness will befall another person or persons. Curses occur vis a vis any supernatural power, such as a spell, a prayer, magic, witchcraft, a god, a natural force, or a spirit. In many belief systems, the curse itself (or accompanying ritual) is considered to be a primary force in the result.

Special names for specific types of curses can be found in various cultures:

  • African American hoodoo presents us with the jinx and crossed conditions, as well as a form of foot track magic, whereby cursed objects are laid in the paths of victims and activated when walked over.
  • Middle Eastern and Mediterranean culture is the source of the belief in the evil eye, which may be the result of envy but, more rarely, is said to be the result of a deliberate curse. In order to be protected from the evil eye, a protection item is made from dark blue circular glass, with a circle of white around the black dot it the middle, which is reminiscent of a human eye. The size of the protective eye item may vary.
  • German people, including the Pennsylvania Dutch speak in terms of hexing (from the German word for witchcraft), and a common hex in days past was that laid by a stable-witch who caused milk cows to go dry and horses to go lame.
  • Indian people use the word Shaap in Hindi and Marathi, shapam in Malayalam, and Sabam in Tamil.

Surprisingly, the Catholic church not only believes in the efficacy of curses but allows that there may be appropriate times to use them. Based on the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Vatican allows that believers may:

  • petition that calamity may be visited by God on persons or things in requital for wrongdoing. … [If] the imprecation be directed towards irrational creatures not on account of their relation to God, but simply as they are in themselves, the guilt is no greater than that which attaches to vain and idle words, except where grave scandal is given, or the evil wished to the irrational creature cannot be separated from serious loss to a rational creature, as would be the case were one to wish the death of another’s horse, or the destruction of his house by fire, for such wishes involved serious violation of charity.

The Algonquin tribe of Native Americans famously cursed its enemies, including a famous hex that the president holding office every 20 years after 1820 would die in office. Only 2 presidents have dodged the presidential curse thus far; Ronald Reagan, who literally had to dodge a bullet to escape, and George W. Bush.

The Curse of 27 is the belief that 27 is an unlucky number due to the number of famous musicians and entertainers who have died at the age. Robert Johnson, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Janis Joplin, Jonathan Brandis and Kurt Cobain are all believed to have been affected by the curse of 27. This is also known as the 27 Club. Some suggest that these folks may have been down to the crossroads and made a pact with the devil and that at the age of 27 is when the devil comes to collect payment for their fame and fortune in the form of their souls.

However, it is arguably the one and only "Original Sin" that wins the prize for the most popular curse on humankind. Doomed to a lifetime of guilt and shame for seeking knowledge, God put the whammy on Adam, Eve, and the snake:

And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Pretty harsh and would be illegal here in the U.S. nowadays...

A Banishment From The Egyptian Secrets of Albertus Magnus (available on the Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook Companion CD)

Three trees are standing on Jesus' heart — the first is called humility, the other forbearing, the third is called, if it pleases, God. Rider, horse, or walker on foot, ye shalt not stand still, and not move from hence until I grant permission.

While pronouncing this, the hat must be placed on the back of the head, and the right hand put three times thereto. When designing to release them, grasp the hat with the left hand, and put the hat as it was before, keep the hat in the left hand and beat with the hat in the direction where they are wanted to move to or remove from hence.

The sufferings of Christ I hear upon me. Oh! trouble leave me, I hold thee fast for Christ's sake and blood, that removes all ill from me, by his sweat and death, by his holy five wounds so red, through his resurrection and ascension to heaven may give that God will protect me as long as I live. † † †

Magic Spell from the Book of Saint Cyprian

O Antigo Livro de São Cipriano: Capa de Aço

Translated from Portuguese by Ray Vogensen

The Great Book of Saint Cyprian is a book that deals with the occult. It was taken from Portugal to Brazil and became widely used in popular religion, especially Umbanda and Candomble. Saint Cyprian is the patron saint of witches, conjurers, root doctors, and spiritual workers, both good and evil.

This book contains instructions to priests on how to cure disease; evil spells and exorcisms; a list of 174 treasures of Galicia; the Prayer of the Guardian Angel; 50 mysteries of witchcraft from the time of the Moors (including medicine); treasure of magic (ex.: way to capture a little devil making a pact with Satan; black magic to destroy a marriage; a skull lit up with candles of grease to do evil to a person); an explanation of hidden powers of hatred and love; the hidden powers of magnetism; prayers of popular religiosity (Magnificat, Cross of Saint Benedict, Dream of Our Lady, Dearly beloved Jesus Christ, a prayer to aid the sick in the hour of death) and the prayer of the Black Goat; etc.

Many consider it a sin to possess it or even to touch it. Some owners of book shops keep it chained inside a box. In Portugal it is believed that reading the book back to front will attract the devil.

The following is a spell taken from the Book of Saint Cyprian.

Spell to do evil using two dolls

Make two cloth dolls, connecting one to the other, tying them so that they appear to be embracing; then put in five nails in the following parts:

1st nail, in the head, going all the way through, saying the following:

So and so (the name of the person to whom you want to do evil), I (say your name), nail you and tie and stab your body, just as I stab, tie and nail your figure.

2nd nail, in the chest, all the way through, saying the following: So and so (the name of the person to whom you want to do evil) I swear to you, under the power of Lucifer and Satan, that from now on you will not have an hour of health.

3rd nail, in the stomach.  So and so, I swear to you, under the power of evil magic, that from now on you will not have one moment of peace.

4th nail, in the legs.  So and so, I swear to you, under the power of Maria Padilha, (see more below) that from now on you will be under this spell..

5th nail, in the feet.  So and so, I nail you and tie you from head to toe, by the power of the sorcerer's magic.  With this the bewitched person will never have a moment of good health.

Maria Padilha - whose name means Queen of Fire, is an entity of light that works for good.  She lived a long time ago in France, and was the madam of a house of prostitution (Cabaré), all the men she had, in each one of her incarnations, which were seven, are with her in the spirit world.  There is a prophecy that says that in the year 2000 Maria Padilha, queen of the queens, will step on the Orixás.  The Orixás will worship her since her mission is to convert the man that she loves (Lucifer, angel of darkness) to the world of light.  They will enter the house of God dressed in white.  She will sit alongside Jesus and he at the feet of Christ.  Maria Padilha will save 7000 souls and will give 7000 to the flames of hell.

To Petition Saint Cipriano:

On a Saturday burn a Purple candle to protection from womanizers, liars, cheaters, and negative attitudes. He helps homeless people and those who have been convicted from getting a heavy sentence.

SÃO CIPRIANO Prayer Against Spells and Witchcraft

SÃO CIPRIANO, WHO BY DIVINE GRACE WAS CONVERTED TO THE FAITH OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST; YOU WHO POSSESSED THE HIGHEST SECRETS OF MAGIC, BUILD NOW A REFUGE FOR ME AGAINST MY ENEMIES AND THEIR EVIL DEEDS.  FOR THE MERIT THAT YOU OBTAINED BEFORE GOD, CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, CANCEL OUT EVIL SPELLS, PRODUCTS OF HATE, THE SPELLS THAT HARDENED HEARTS HAVE CAST OR WILL COME TO CAST AGAINST MY PERSON AND AGAINST MY HOME.  WITH THE PERMISSION OF GOD ALMIGHTY, ANSWER MY PRAYER AND COME TO MY ASSISTANCE, FOR THE BLOOD OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.  SO SHALL IT BE. AMEN.

To Banish all Robbers, Murderers, and Foes.

From The Egyptian Secrets of Albertus Magnus (available on the Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook Companion

God be with you, brethren. Desist you, thieves, robbers, murderers, waylayers, and warriors in meekness, because we all have partaken of the rose-colored blood of Jesus Christ. Your rifles, guns, and cannons be spiked, with the holy drops of our Redeemer's blood. All sabres and deadly weapons be closed, with the five wounds of our dear Master, Jesus Christ. Three roses are blooming on Jesus' heart. The first is kind, the other is mighty, the third represents God's strong will. Under these, ye thieves and murderers are become still, as long as I will, and ye are banished, and your foul deeds have vanished. † † †

Voodoo Doll Binding Spell

The purpose of binding spells is to render harmless a person who is mentally or emotionally abusing you. When done properly, binding spells do not harm the target person, they simply make the person powerless to mentally or emotionally harm you.

These types of spells are preferable over revenge spells because you don't have the same kind of karmic backlash when you render a hurtful person harmless. Whenever you choose to harm another human being, whether they deserve it or not, there will always be some sort of consequence for you or those close to you, so you should always choose binding spells over revenge spells.

Materials:
Small cloth poppet, with the head unstitched
Needle and thread
Personal item from the person you want to bind, such as fingernail clippings, hair, or piece of clothing
Red ribbon
Black candle

Directions:

Call on Papa Legba to Open the doors to the Spirit World. Say:

Open the door papa Legba, your child awaits

Open the door Papa, so that I may pass

Open the door Papa Legba, when I return I will thank the Loa.

Light the black candle. Concentrating deeply on the person you are binding, place the personal object inside the head of the doll and sew it shut. Tie the red ribbon around the poppet's head, and around all areas of the body to symbolize immobilizing the person. Chant:

''With harm to none, my will be done
I hereby bind you (name of person)
Your words cannot harm me
Your thoughts cannot harm me

Your actions cannot harm me
You cannot harm me''

Focus all of your energy into this chant until you feel power coursing through your veins. Visualize the person helpless to harm and abuse you while you are chanting. Take the doll far away from your home and bury it in the woods under a big oak tree. Pour sea salt on the area where the doll is buried. Leave the area and do not look back and do not ever return to that area.

Thank the Loas for their protection and power.

Black Voodoo DollBlack Arts Spell

If you have a real enemy, try this Voodoo doll spell. For this spell, you need a Voodoo doll made from black fabric, a black candle, some black arts oil, a box big enough to put the doll in, a black cloth, 9 pennies, and a bottle of rum. Anoint the black candle with the Black Arts Oil. Burn the candle for 17 minutes each day for nine days. Hold the candle in your nondominant hand while it burns, and curse the person, wish ill upon him/her, etc. while allowing the wax to drip all over the doll’s body. After the ninth day, place the remainder of the candle along with the doll in a small box. Anoint the doll and the box with Black Arts Oil. Wrap the box in black cloth. Tie it with cotton twine. Take it to the cemetery and bury it. Pay the spirits of the cemetery 9 pennies and a small bottle of rum. Walk away without looking back.

Binding Spells

This is based on ancient Greek magick. Binding formulas were typically written on a poppet called a Kolossus, spoken above it, or both. Writings were often written backwards, to confuse the target. The spoken spell was usually accompanied by ritual actions, such as the mutilation, piercing or binding of the figure (Sophistes, 1996).Greek Kolossoi

Take a voodoo doll and wrap it with cord as if your were binding the person it represents to keep them from moving. As you wrap the doll repeat one or more of the following simple binding chants:

I hereby bind (name of target)!

May (name of target) be defeated!

Let (name of target) be restrained!

Bury the doll in your yard in an area where no one will walk over it.

Voodoo Doll Reversal Spell

Send negativity back to it's source with this Voodoo Doll Reversal Spell!

If you are wondering what to do when someone has sent some negative energy your way via a spell, curse, jinx, hex, or crossing, follow these instructions.

Procure a general purpose Voodoo doll. Write the person's name on a piece of parchment paper, anoint with olive oil, and tuck into the doll.  Burn a white candle on a Saturday, under the waning moon, as you chant the following again and again:

"All harmful intent you meant for me returns to you (insert person's name) times three!!!"

In this way, you are simply acting as a "mirror," reflecting all the negativity back to the original sender. The person will only receive back what he/she has sent out.
