of Magickal Doll Terms
Following is a list of terms associated with Voodoo dolls and
magickal dolls. It is a work in progress, so please check back as it is
completed.
Cursed Doll. A doll believed to have negative
energy attached to it, so that when it comes in contact with a
person, the negative energy is transferred to that person via
contagious magic.
Fetish.
A fetish is an object, talisman, or amulet, believed to have
supernatural powers.
Haunted Doll. A
doll believed to be possessed by the spirit of a dead person or
other spiritual entity. A haunted doll may also bear the residual
energy of a past event that is felt when in its presence.
Ju Ju Doll. A Ju Ju is an object used as a
charm, amulet, or means of protection; a fetish, or the supernatural
or magical power attributed to such objects, or the system of
observances connected therewith.
Ju Ju dolls are commonly sought
for their good luck and protection properties. Sometimes Ju Ju dolls
are referred to as guardians because they are used to protect the
home from evil and negativity.
Kachina.
Stylized
religious icons, meticulously carved from cottonwood root and
painted to represent figures from Hopi mythology. Originally used to
teach children about their religion, they have become a popular Hopi
art form.
Kolossos (kaw-lawss-SAUCE). A Greek word used to describe
an effigy of any kind of ancient origin, such as Greek poppets,
ritual effigies, voodoo dolls.
Nkisi (plural Minkisi,
also Nkishi/Minkishi). Translated as "sacred
medicine". The term is used to describe both elevated spirits
(Mpungo) as well as the sacred containers in which they reside.
