For an
Animal Who has Passed On
O God, you are
infinite, unbounded Love, and will
not allow the love which exists
between your creatures to perish: We
pray for those animals who have
died. Comfort all
those who mourn,
especially those who have lost a
beloved pet. Amen.
Burial Ritual
for a Pet Who has Passed
Find a special place for
the burial. Close to
your home, in the
backyard, in a favorite
place in the wilderness
where you used to take
walks or any other place
that feels right to you.
Wrap your pet in white
cloth and sprinkle with
holy water. You may
write a petition and
include it with the
animal before wrapping
it. The petition can be
a special prayer or
anything you would like
to say to your pet about
your life together.
There is no wrong or
right with this, do what
feels best to you.
Dig
a hole that is larger
than your pet and that
will cover it with at
least one foot of earth.
Place your pet in the
bottom of the hole and
sprinkle with tobacco
and cedar. While doing
so, say the following:
Leader: From the womb
of our Mother you were
born, and to the womb of
our Mother shall you
return.
Participants: In
beauty shall you return
to Mother.
Leader: Let us
rejoice in your life;
let us be forever
grateful for your
loyalty and
companionship.
Participants: In
beauty shall you return
to Mother.
Leader: In you, I
have seen the beauty of
Spirit, the beauty of
creation, the wonder of
the Creator.
Participants: In
beauty shall you return
to Mother.
At
this point, cover your
pet with the earth and
press it firmly in
place. You may plant a
flower or bush or tree
at the spot if you wish,
or simply place a cross
or cairn to mark your
pet's burial site.
Say a heartfelt
prayer of your own at this time, and
allow others to do the same. End
your prayer with "until we meet
again...may you rest in peace."
