The Wishing Tomb
One of
the most famous bits of New Orleans folklore is that of the
haunted New Orleans Voodoo wish spell. Performed by tourists
and natives alike, this spell takes place at the site of
Marie Laveau's final resting place.
Several
versions exist regarding the exact method of making a wish
at her tomb. Some people leave small gifts at the base of
the grave site such as coins, Mardi Gras beads, flowers,
candles, crosses, and other such traditional Voodoo
offerings. Many follow a custom of making a wish at the tomb
by knocking three times and asking for a favor. Others leave
an offering of silver coins in the attached cup after
drawing an "X" three times on the tomb, placing their hand
over it, and rubbing their foot three times against the
bottom of the tomb. Still another version involves
leaving an offering of food,
money, and flowers, drawing an "X" three
|
times on the tomb with a piece of red
brick, turning around three times and then asking Marie for
help. Some conclude the ritual by running across the street
to the church and lighting a candle.
Make a Wish
& Set a Spell, Virtually
To make a a wish on the tomb of Marie
Laveau, knock on the image of her tomb on your computer
screen three times. Get up and turn around three times, then
sit back down in front of your computer and make a cross
using your finger on her tomb. Then, place your hand over
the spot where you drew your symbolic cross, and ask her for
your favor. After your request, you must make a donation to
a charity of your choice and tell her about your intent to
do so. Then make sure you do what you say you will do. |
